Object List

The following list describes the objects you come across during your adventures in Kolyma. Since it also mentions if each object made an appearance in the original King’s Quest II, this is also a comparison guide of sorts. This list may contain spoilers and is not to be read by people who haven't beaten the game yet, as it may ruin your fun.

If n/a is displayed in the obtainable from-category, it means the object is not obtained from a location or person, but appears in your inventory after certain actions. Version 2.0 of this document was compiled by J. King and finalised in XHTML using Javascript to make this guide suitable for all browsers. J. King also wrote the nifty hint-revealing system.

Object: Amulet Present in original: yes Present in RTS: no Obtainable from: Island in the enchanted realm Description: A magical amulet that allowed you to return home by simply saying the word imprinted on it. This item provided the ultimate opportunity to screw up on yourself and teleport back to Daventry right before meeting Valanice. In the remake, the magical portal on the little island replaces it, and thus it won't appear as an object. (But you can still screw up)

Object: Baby bird Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Pond in the forest Description: Like it or not, you're going to spend a lot of time bringing lost kids back to their worried family in this game. Finding it is easy, catching it is not.

Object: Baby pumpkin Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Kolyma Square Description: Awwww… the poor little baby pumpkin has been taken away from its mother and now spends its life attracting potential victims of a shady con-artist. Reuniting the little kid with its mother will net you a little reward for your kindness.

Object: Basket Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: A random place in the countryside Description: The role of the basket isn't altered in the new version of King’s Quest II. In both versions you were supposed to return the basket to its owner; a sweet little girl wearing a red cloak. The contents of the basket have been changed though. The original basket contained goodies for Grandma; the basket in the VGA-version contains yellow flowers. In the original version, the basket was found in the only place where you wouldn't expect a lost basket to be; in Grandma's mailbox. In the new version, it can be found in a random spot at the beach or in the woods, which makes much more sense.

Object: Bible page Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Church of Kolyma Description: What's a weird poem doing in a Bible? This cryptic message holds the key to successfully navigating the swamps. Since the swamps only appear in the remake, the page is unnecessary and therefore non-existent in the original version.

Object: Birth Gem of Water Present in original: of course not Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Neptune Description: One of the gems of nature Graham's looking for. Neptune has this jewel in his possession, but won't part with it unless you do him a favour first. Other than being one of the keys for the Door of Destiny, it's also capable of granting you access to another place if used in the right way.

Object: Black book Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Anastasia Description: This book is actually a fake, but there's some very important information written there anyway. And it contains an item that will come in handy very soon.

Object: Black cloak Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Grandma Description: Here's your chance on trying out one of those infamous black cloaks. It'll protect you from the spirits near the castle in both versions of the game. In the VGA-version it won't fool the boatman though. In case you were wondering how Grandma got this stuff; she has an interesting story to tell.

Object: Bottle Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Shipwreck Description: The glass bottle and its contents appeared in both versions. In the original, it was a gift from Neptune to you for returning his trident. In the remake, it's shipwrecked in the domain of the Sharkees. Besides its use in the original of containing an even more useful item, there is another use for this thing.

Object: Bottled fish Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Let's see. Candles aren't exactly known for their functionality underwater and flashlights weren't invented yet. If you need to check out the dark depths of the ocean nevertheless, improvisation is often the key to success. Especially if glowing fish are part of it.

Object: Bottled grass Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Combine grass with glass and presto, we have the perfect bait if you're in the mood for fishing underwater. Since one of the ingredients was missing in the original, this one isn't in Sierra's version.

Object: Bowl Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Suitable for keeping little pumpkin kids against their will. Also suitable for holding liquids. (but how on earth do you stash something like that in your pockets?) Like the pumpkin, it didn't appear in the original game.

Object: Bracelet Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Anastasia Description: You get this item from Anastasia after getting the right book from the bookshelf. It'll allow you to enter the graveyard without having to join the local undead. In the original, it used to be hidden under a clamshell on the beach and it was one of the sapphire jewels that served no purpose besides awarding points.

Object: Bridle Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Rock mound Description: Ah…the third gift of the genie in the old AGI version of King’s Quest II. It was a part of one of the most notorious puzzles in the game. In the remake, its use is a little more obvious, but it's not as easy to find. The evil enchanter who lives in the mountain cave hid the bridle and changed its form to protect it from thieves. Finding it will be tricky.

Object: Brooch Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Ma Pumpkin Description: The brooch has the same purpose as the earrings. Both have sapphires embedded into them and both can be used to pay someone or (in the remake) to finish the creation of a magical object. In the original, it was found inside a hole in a rock near the lake. In the remake, it's a reward for bringing a lost kid back to its mother.

Object: Caged nightingale Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Hagatha's cave Description: Normal people would keep a nightingale with them to listen to the singing of the bird or to let them carry messages. Sick-minded people would use a nightingale in creepy concoctions to restore their youth. In both games, the shopkeeper of the antique store asks Graham to retrieve the bird from Hagatha. In the original, the bird probably lives happily ever after. In the remake, it becomes clear that the bird wasn't Angelina's property after all and it ends up as…well, you don't want to know. But it's not like its new owner lives happily ever after either.

Object: Candle Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Ma Pumpkin or Caldaur's library Description: Useful to see in dark areas. (Assuming there's oxygen around to keep the flame from going out) Doing a second favour for someone can net you this item. If you don't feel noble enough to go out of your way and help someone for it, you might as well help yourself when you come across one at a certain point in the game. In the original, this object was found in one of the towers of Dracula's castle.

Object: Carpet Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Basement of the antique shop Description: Formerly owned by Al..Din. Hmmm, wonder who that was. Like most magical carpets this thing can fly. Unlike most magical carpets it can't be controlled. In the original game, this thing was a gift from the genie. In AGDI's version, it's kept in Angelina's storage area. Of course, there's no problem with you taking it, as the former owner is unlikely to ever use it again.

Object: Chicken soup Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The home of the dwarf Description: Does a good job at strengthening ailing people. This is one of the situations that wasn't changed in the remake. In both versions, you'll get to take the soup from the dwarf's house and give it to Grandma. In the remake, you'll learn that the soup actually belonged to Possum.

Object: Clamshell Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The beach Description: The clamshell is pretty much found in the same location as it was in the original version except for the fact that it was in plain sight in the old version and slightly more hidden in the King’s Quest II remake. Its purpose is altered a bit. In the original, there was a bracelet hidden under it. In the King’s Quest II remake, there's a valuable pearl inside.

Object: Cloth Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The glass bottle Description: A fairly large cloth that can be used in a multitude of ways. (In the remake) It can be used to keep nervous bird quiet, it can hold other items and it can even act as a handkerchief (yuck).

Object: Coconut Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Tiny island in the enchanted realm Description: A pretty normal coconut if you take a look at how weird the vegetation is in the enchanted realm. It's highly unlikely that it exists in the original since you don't even get near the place where it's found in that game.

Object: Coconut half Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Item above divided by 2. Unlike the object mentioned above, this one can make a suitable container for liquids. Again, doesn't appear in the original.

Object: Coins Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The home of the dwarf Description: Hmmm… gold coins from the magic chest of Daventry. That dwarf probably didn't get those in an honest way. So there's no reason in letting him keep 'em. These coins do not appear in the original version. In the old AGI version there were earrings inside the chest.

Object: Crucifix Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Church of Kolyma Description: Given to you by the monk in the monastery of Kolyma. In the original, this cross was an effective protection against ghosts and vampires. In the remake it isn't really effective at protecting you against anything. It's the key to getting inside Caldaur's castle. (And yes, you may take that literally)

Object: Crystal Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Your sword Description: Embedded in the hilt of your sword, the crystal was originally for decorative purposes only. It might serve you some other purpose as well if you could only… get… it… loose.

Object: Death Gem of Earth Present in original: no way Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Count Caldaur Description: The death gem acts as the final key to the Door of Destiny and it's the property of the Count. Like the sapphire tiara, the death gem is a treasured heirloom that has been in Caldaur's family for ages and it's even more valuable than the tiara. It's found in exactly the same place as the third gold key was in the original, but this time you won't get away with taking it and running back to the enchanted door.

Object: Dome Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Hagatha's cave Description: This enchanted artifact was mocking you from the other side of the room the first time you entered Hagatha's cave. Unfortunately, there was no way to obtain it back then. You can get it near the end of the game to learn an interesting truth about the realm where Valanice was kept.

Object: Earrings Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Fallen log Description: These pretty earrings are the proof that the King’s Quest II remake still retained SOME aspects of the original. In King’s Quest II-style they're tucked away in a fallen log near the road to Kolyma town. In the original version, the same log contained a necklace instead of earrings and the earrings were in the dwarf's house. Like in the original, the earrings can be used as payment, but they can also act as the ingredient for the construction of a magical object.

Object: Emerald Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The enchanter's workbench Description: This HAS to be one of the most useful things in a fantasy world; an item against evil magic users. The emerald, once created, will shield its owner against weaker enchantments and can cure enchantments on others as well by amplifying a beam of light that shines through it. Unfortunately, it only appears in the remake and creating it is not an easy process.

Object: Feather Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The swan lake Description: A beautiful swan feather. Useful for stirring things up. You'll earn it for reuniting one more broken up family. This feather only appears in the remake.

Object: Filled coconut half Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Makeshift container filled with the watery liquid that makes up the ocean of the enchanted realm. Appears only in the remake. Used for preparing your escape route.

Object: Fish meat Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Beach of the enchanted realm (cliff area) Description: Ugh… raw fish. Eating this can have certain effects on Graham. (In addition to the fish bones getting stuck in your throat and your stomach complaining about your choice of food) It's only obtainable in the remake.

Object: Flower Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Possum Description: The girl with the red cape is collecting them as a present for her ill grandmother. If you're nice to her and help her find a lost possession, you'll likely get one as a gift. In the original, it made a nice present for sunbathing mer-folk. In the remake, it doesn't smell very nice anymore and it's more suitable to act as a replacement for a yellow vegetable.

Object: Flyer Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The rickety bridge Description: Either master Yoda just opened a shop in town or some swindler with a fake accent is hunting for customers. (Keeping Lucas Company's legal department in mind, it's probably safe to bet on the latter) In the remake, it will appear after you've found out about your mission and in the original, it won't appear at all.

Object: Fool's gold Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The forest area east of the fallen log Description: These coins appear to be valuable gold coins from a distance, but as soon as one picks them up, he'll notice that they're made of ordinary metal. In many King’s Quest games, picking up everything that was lying on the ground in the middle of nowhere was considered a good habit. You'd better think twice about that habit in the King’s Quest II remake though, unless you enjoy looking at the world from a very awkward angle. There's only one use in the world for coins like these; attract a fool's attention.

Object: Gems in cloth Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Yuck. The gems are contained in a cloth somebody blew his nose in. No wonder they don't fall out of those indentations in the door.

Object: Gold disk Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Hagatha's cave Description: For the biggest part of the game, you'll probably be wondering what the heck this little gadget is for. Taken from Hagatha's cloak, it doesn't serve a purpose right away, but will prove crucial to opening the door of the tower where Valanice is held captive. Seeing that the door wasn't even locked to begin with in the original version, this disk will only appear in the remake.

Object: Gold key Present in original: yes Present in RTS: no Obtainable from: Neptune's place, Mountain cave, Dracula's coffin Description: These three keys were the precursors of the three gems of nature. The goal of the game was to obtain them and access the realm where Valanice was imprisoned. Seeing that they're replaced with the three stones of nature, they don't appear in the remake.

Object: Gold ring Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Castle graveyard Description: The wedding ring from Anastasia's parents. It can be obtained after the two ghosts leave. It has no real purpose puzzle-wise, but it's convenient to have one during the wedding at the end (unless you want Graham to appear as cheap).

Object: Grass Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Sharkee domain Description: This particular grass only grows in the depths of the ocean and is the favourite food of a certain inhabitants of the sea. The grass itself isn't that useful, but the species one level higher on the food chain sure is. As the quest for the trident is something new to the King’s Quest II remake, this item is non-existent in the original version.

Object: Growth Gem of Air Present in original: nope Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The cloud spirit Description: The second gem of nature is guarded by the Cloud spirit. Getting there is already a challenge and the spirit will only give it to you after you have shown honour, compassion and loyalty. Like the other gems, this one only appears in the remake.

Object: Ham Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Caldaur's dining room Description: The purpose and location of this item remained unchanged throughout the renewal process of the King’s Quest II remake. It's found on the table in the dining room of the castle. In both games it can be used to act as a replacement for your own tasty meat when dealing with a certain hungry carnivore.

Object: Knife Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The dwarf Description: You'll occasionally have the chance of getting this knife, but in most cases “getting it” means catching the sharp end of this thing with your chest. You'll only get hold of it for a split-second and you'll have another split-second to use it. It's not like you really need it when you have your own sword anyway. In the original, you won't get your hands on this item at all.

Object: Lamp Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Antique shop Description: Oh goody, they included a magical lamp with a genie!!! Oh crap, they forgot to include the genie. In the original game, rubbing the lamp caused a genie to appear who'd give you a magical carpet, a sword and a bridle. In the remake, all there's inside there is a crappy note with a riddle telling you that the genie was freed by his former master. Fortunately, the riddle on the note allows passage to a room where you can still get one of the items you would have obtained in the original. In both games, the lamp is reward for “returning” the nightingale to the owner of the antique shop.

Object: Lemon Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Lemon tree Description: Not exactly Graham's favourite type of food. But someone else likes the taste of it. It can be found in the most obvious location.

Object: Lemon scented water Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Cool spring water mixed with lemon juice. Isn't this what they call Bitter Lemon? Not Graham's personal favourite drink.

Object: Letter Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Kolyma square Description: Grandma's ahead of her time, but most people in Kolyma still use the crack under their door as mailbox. A little maneuver with a long, flat object will yield this item that contains the card mentioned below.

Object: Letter from M. Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The nightingale cage Description: Err… no, we're not talking about some James Bond Easter egg here. This item is easy to miss, since you don't have much opportunity to take it. The item doesn't have any value puzzle-wise, it's just a reference to things yet to come in future King’s Quest games. As Roberta designed the King’s Quest games in order, this object couldn't have been and isn't in the original game.

Object: Lion fur Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The quartz tower Description: Be sure to keep this little souvenir with you as soon as you find it, as it's crucial to your survival later on. Can cause heavy fits of sneezing.

Object: Mallet Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Forest south of Kolyma Description: This handy-dandy tool can be found in exactly the same location as the original version; a hole inside a tree. In the original, its only use was to drive a stake through Dracula's heart. In this game, its range of use is a lot wider. Whenever you need a little more force than you would be able to apply with your bare hands, the mallet will get the trick done.

Object: Membership card Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Letter Description: Feel honoured. Feel very honoured. With this item, you'll get the privilege of becoming one of the two members of Kolyma's library. Assuming it's signed of course. Seeing that there wasn't even a library to begin with in the original, it wouldn't have made much sense for Roberta to include this item in the original game.

Object: Necklace Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The mermaid Description: This item sort of appeared in the original as part of the collection of sapphire jewels. (Where you could find it in a hollow log) In the remake, it's gift from the mermaid and instead of a sapphire there's a shimmering opal attached to it. The brilliant opal is stunningly beautiful (in quite a literal way).

Object: Needle Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The haystack Description: That's already the second needle Graham has to get out of a haystack. (Or wait, the other one was in King’s Quest V so that makes this one the first) Searching the haystack for it won't do, but helping out the inhabitant of the haystack will reap profits in no time. The needle has the potential to make a great projectile, but unless you do something to increase its potency, your opponent won't even flinch when hit by it.

Object: Net Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The pier Description: The net can be found near the docks at the start of the game. It's a very useful item that will allow you to catch beautiful golden fish, ugly ducklings and even uglier green toads. In the original version, the net was found on the beach of the enchanted realm (wonder how it got THERE).

Object: Note from genie Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Lamp Description: As noted before (pun not intended) this letter was left behind by the former inhabitant of the magical lamp. It gives you a clue about a certain secret.

Object: Pearl Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Clamshell Description: Pearls make a decent alternative to real currency. The only problem is that buyers usually don't hand out change, so you might end up feeling conned after giving away a perfect pearl in exchange for some piece of junk you didn't have enough cash for.

Object: Picket Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Beach Description: A part of the fence around Grandma's home. It's found lying on the beach west of the cottage. It looks a bit like a wooden stake. But its only use is to serve as an alternative to your sword or mallet at certain points. In the original, there was a stake leaning against a tree in the field. It was used to kill Dracula in combination with the hammer.

Object: Pin shooter Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: You now have your own homemade peashooter. Loaded with a sharp needle, this thing stings when hitting its target. Unfortunately, it doesn't do more than that unless you can find some way to increase its potency.

Object: Poison needle Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Dipped in the venomous waters around Caldaur's castle, this little thing is a deadly weapon. You can't simply walk up to someone and stick this thing into him without getting mauled of course.

Object: Poison pin shooter Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: n/a Description: Spelling instant dead for anyone on the business end of this thing, it's a useful item if you want to even the odds in your favour. Just be careful when putting it in your pocket.

Object: Quartz stone Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Tiny island in the enchanted realm Description: This piece of quartz activates the guardians of the tower and is crucial to your progress. You'll have to search the ground carefully in order to get to the little island where it's found. Since the door of the tower wasn't locked in the original, it doesn't appear there.

Object: Reed Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The poisoned lake or the swan lake Description: Amazing that these plants can still grow near the poisonous water of the lake surrounding Caldaur's castle. Since the plants have hollow stems, you can put something inside it. Like a projectile. Only in the remake though.

Object: Ruby ring Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Grandma Description: The ruby ring forms a pair with the cloak. Both are under Grandma's bed. In the original version, this ring was nothing more than another part of your disguise. In AGDI's version the ring plays a more significant part as it bails you out of a very uncomfortable situation.

Object: Shell comb Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Merchant Description: A graceful comb that's carved out of a shell. It's probably the only item in the merchant's assortment that's capable of surpassing the definition of junk. Of course, the only way of getting it is by trading an even more valuable item for it. It makes a great gift for mer-people with long hair.

Object: Shovel Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Base castle tower Description: Did anybody else have that feeling of deja vu when seeing that shovel at the bottom of the winding stairway? This is yet another one of those objects that appear a lot throughout the series (not in the original King’s Quest II though). It's really useful when you want to raid the cemetery. Be careful whose grave you desecrate however or grave consequences will follow.

Object: Silver key Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Black book Description: A tiny silver key that was hidden in the black book mentioned above. Note that there was also a silver key in the original that was used to open a chest containing the tiara in Dracula's castle (an optional item in THAT game).

Object: Small key Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Hagatha's cave Description: In the original, the caged nightingale was put there for the taking. Hagatha wasn't even always around if you entered the cave. She obviously became more wary in the remake as the cage is chained to the wall there. No problem though, the key to your problems (and the lock) is close by.

Object: Spring water Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Spring in the forest Description: You can always drink some cool, refreshing water from the spring in the forest, but unless you have a suitable container, you won't be able to take it with you. In the original, there was no spring, so no spring water either.

Object: Sugar cube Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: The winged steed Description: Ah…the sugar cube. In the original it was your reward for figuring out that bridles crossed with snakes become flying horses. Like in the remake, this block of magical sugar makes you immune to the poisonous thorns surrounding Caldaur's castle. Like before, it's nearly impossible to avoid the thorns, so the sugar cube is a must-have unless you have WAY too much time on your hands. Thank goodness meeting the flying steed is no longer optional.

Object: Sword Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Daventry's throne room (is taken during the introduction) Description: You have your trusty sword with you from the start. It's the sword of the first king of Daventry and a valuable royal heirloom. The blade is made of sharp steel and there's a clear crystal embedded in its hilt. You'll be using this thing a lot, but you'll hardly ever kill anyone with it. In the original, you obtained a sword from the genie. It allowed you to get past certain obstacles by force, but there was always a better solution that awarded more points and thus the sword was basically useless.

Object: Tiara Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Larmon Odnarb's grave Description: Ironic, isn't it? In the original, you got points for “stealing” this item from the castle and in the remake, you get points for bringing it back. This pretty piece of jewelry is an important heirloom of Caldaur's family and the reward for retrieving it is the gift of the death gem, but getting it will be hard and hazardous.

Object: Treasure Island Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Caldaur's library Description: No, you don't put an entire island in your pocket. It's the name of the book written by Robert Louis Stevenson. It contains a clue on where to start looking for the tiara, but finding this thing is definitely not easy.

Object: Trident Present in original: yes Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Sharkee treasury Description: Neptune's fabled trident, no less. In the original, this item was a cinch to obtain as Neptune simply got careless and left it on the beach there. In the remake, it's a whole lot harder to get your hands on this magical pitchfork, as the king of the Sharkee people stole it. Those of good will can use the trident to mess around with the form of certain objects. Fun for all the family.

Object: Wolf's bane Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Grandma's cottage Description: This ointment can ward off wolves for a very short while. Unfortunately, it loses its effect very quickly, the solution can't take much shaking and its container is quite fragile.

Object: Youth potion Present in original: no Present in RTS: yes Obtainable from: Basement of the antique shop Description: This magical potion takes the body of the drinker a few decades back in time. It's the object of desire for many old people (especially two old people you'll meet in the game). As with many other medicines, mixing it with other things before taking it in is NOT recommended.
